Ortho Evra Lawsuits

A number of Ortho Evra lawsuits have been filed against Ortho-McNeil in response to serious health problems caused by the Ortho Evra birth control patch. The Ortho Evra birth control patch has been linked with 23 deaths since it went on the market in 2002 and continues to cause widespread concern about blood clots and cardiovascular complications.

Ortho Evra and hormone exposure

The Ortho Evra patch, which adheres to a woman’s skin, was designed to simplify contraception through a weekly dosage.

However, studies performed on women using the Ortho Evra birth control patch have proven that the drug releases approximately 60% more estrogen into the bloodstream, as compared with traditional, orally ingested birth control pills. This heightened level of the hormones can cause serious and even fatal birth control patch side effects.

Of the 23 women whose deaths have been associated with the Ortho Evra birth control patch, 18 suffered blood clots, and 5 suffered heart attacks and strokes. Here are just a few Ortho Evra birth control patch lawsuits:

  • An Ortho Evra birth control patch lawsuit was filed on
behalf of a 35-year-old woman who died of severe blood
clots due to the Ortho Evra patch. She had been
hospitalized after complaining of headaches, nausea and
    visual problems shortly before dying.
  • A 14-year-old Wisconsin girl had used the Ortho Evra
birth control patch for just eight weeks, suffered blood
clots in her pelvis and died. Her family filed an Ortho Evra
birth control patch lawsuit on her behalf.
  • Another Ortho Evra lawsuit was filed on behalf of
a 35-year-old woman who, after using the Ortho Evra
birth control patch, suffered from severe headaches,
nausea and visual problems before dying from blood clots.

FDA forces Ortho-McNeil to change the patch’s warning label

In response to comprehensive studies on the drug and the many Ortho Evra birth control patch lawsuits, the Food and Drug Administration has revised Ortho Evra’s warning label. Whereas it once merely mentioned the risks for heavy smokers and those with heart complications, it now includes the risks correlated with heightened levels of estrogen. These are serious birth control patch side effects.
